The Moodle attendance tracking helps to list the students that have enrolled in a given course automatically. For that, the members of the faculty will not be needed to create a different student list. Also, the faculty members can be able to set up several sessions of the class simultaneously, then they would record the attendance later. This system also provides the students attendance report every month and the students will know the class that they will need to attend. Basically, it acts as a blueprint for the class attendance and its activities. It is not easy to set up the attendance tracking in Moodle, but I’ve put together a guide to help you pull it off.
Using Moodle Attendance Tracking
Setting Up The System
You will need to start by setting it up, which will involve some stages. Here are the steps to set up the system.
1. Add a new Activity
You will need to begin by adding a new activity, but before you do so, you must ensure that the edit mode is turned on. The activity to add will be the Attendance.
2. Give the Activity a name
Once you have created the new Activity, you will be needed to name the Attendance. This will only need to be added to a single attendance item in order to encompass the entire quarter. After you have changed the name and grade total of the Attendance, you will then need to save it, then go back to the course. This will be instant, because you will simply click on the Save and Return To Course button. When you finish, a new attendance will appear on the course, so you will simply click on it to adjust your settings.
3. Add The Sessions
A session is the amount of time that you need to keep track of a particular Attendance in the course. You will then click on the Add session icon, in order to add the number of sessions that you need to include. After adding the Sessions, you can view the times and days that you have set up for every session. This can be done by simply clicking on the Sessions tab. You can also delete the Sessions that are outdated or irrelevant, for instance Spring or Fall break. Or you may choose to customize the times of meeting by simply clicking on the button for updating a session. When adding the sessions, you can add as many as you wish. You will also need to include the date and time that the session will commence, the duration and when it would end, in terms of the date and time. Under the sessions, you will also need to include when the students would be meeting.
4. After that, you will select No Grade, in order to leave the grading open
5. Select the Hide option. When you choose the hide option, you will be able to see the Attendance link on the Moodle Page, though the students will not be see the link.
6. You can then choose to add the Groups, if they will be applicable. To add the groups, you will include them as you are setting up the sessions.
7. Configure/Save The Settings.
You will then need to save the Attendance settings that you have customized. To save the settings, you will need to use the Attendance link. The link will appear, but only you will be able to view it. You’ll then click on Attendance in order to set up the sessions and to establish the attendance of the students. You will then Click on the Edit icon in order to change the initial settings, then ensure that you have saved them after editing.
By clicking the Settings button, you will be able to adjust the codes of the Attendance, such as the late or present. You will also be able to change or update the grade point value. And when you are through, click on Update.
Keep in mind that when you are done, Moodle will pre load four attendance code, but you can customize the codes according to your preferences.
Taking Or Recording the Attendance
To take the attendance, you will need to click on the attendance activity that is on the main page of the Moodle course. Then you will click on The Session button, then click on a small, green circle in order to collect the attendance for the related session that is on the same course. You can choose to view the students in a grid or in a list. In order to review the attendance, you will click on the Report, then simply click on each session to view the details.
When you are creating the attendance, a Gradebook entry will be created automatically in order to be used in the attendance. You can assign a zero weight to the attendance, only if you are using the Gradebook and you do not wish to consider the attendance as a grade. The students will be able to view the record of their personal attendance if they click on the attendance block. You can keep the attendance block to record the class participation of any session. This can be done by replacing the codes of attendance with the levels of participation.
Suppose the number of points found in an attendance is altered, then it could mean that the Gradebook will not be able to be recalculated at some point. In order to push for an update, you will need to alter the point value that is found in the attendance preference area, then change the point value to your preferred value. For instance, you can alter the point value from 2 to 3 points, according to your preference. This will push for a recalculation of the grade in the attendance.
Conclusion you can use a Moodle attendance plugin, which may be used to record the class attendance. This can be added by turning the edit mode on on the course, then you can simply add it. You will only be allowed to create one attendance in a single Moodle course, but the sessions can be as many as you wish.
